The Top 5 On-screen Love Triangles

September 19, 2017

At one point in every romance film, a conflict presents itself and threatens to tear our lovers apart, but what happens when there's third player in the game of love?
Should they just give up and go home? If that were to happen, these amazing films wouldn't exist.

In celebration of the release of THE PROMISE on DVD, we have put together a list of the Top 5 love triangles in film.

THE PROMISE IS NEW TO BUY OR RENT ON DVD AND DIGITAL NOW.

  1. THE PROMISE

Set in the final days of the Ottoman Empire, when Armenia was in a state of terror, young medical student Mikhael (Oscar Isaac) meets the beautiful, sophisticated Ana (Charlotte Le Bon) and is immediately drawn to her. The catch? She is already involved with American reporter, Chris Myers (Christian Bale). Amidst the war and tragedy, Mikhael and Ana struggle to make it work while everything around them crumbles, with the outbreak of World War I.

  2. TO ROME WITH LOVE

In every ensemble cast film, there is bound to be a love triangle, particularly when the film is a rom-com. TO ROME WITH LOVE explores four separate love stories, each with their own conflicts including mistaken identity, family squabbles, life in the spotlight and the love triangle between a man, his girlfriend and his girlfriend's best friend.

  3. VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA

Vicky (Rebecca Hall) and Cristina (Scarlett Johansson) embark on a holiday to Barcelona where they meet the handsome Juan Antonio (Javier Bardem) and are immediately smitten with him. As their holiday continues, Vicky tries to fight her attraction to Juan Antonio and stay faithful to her fiance, Doug (Chris Messina), while Cristina gives in. This love triangle is not just a fun, holiday fling, it is the opportunity for a new life.

  4. WHAT IF?

Disillusioned by the bad relationships he's had to endure, Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe) decides to put his love life on hold. He meets Chantry (Zoe Kazan) at a party and feels an instant connection to her. The two decide to see if a guy and a girl can really be friends without falling in love. Wallace tries to deal with being Chantry's friend, encountering multiple issues including her long-term boyfriend Ben (Rafe Spall), their friends' teasing observations of their relationship and the onslaught of rom-coms telling them their friendship won't survive.

  5. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE

The Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) love triangle is arguably the most iconic one of the late 2000s. This love triangle drew a divide between loyal fans of The Twilight Saga, going so far as to declare whether they are Team Edward or Team Jacob. Bella Swan is put in a predicament when she has to decide between the mysterious and brooding vampire, Edward, and the fun-loving, outgoing werewolf, Jacob.
