Our Fave On-Screen Presidents

August 21, 2017

With Designated Survivor out now on DVD, it’s a great time to reflect on those fictional Presidents who have guided America through everything from terror attacks to alien invasion.

President Tim Beck – Deep Impact (Morgan Freeman)

Morgan Freeman provides brave leadership and killer speeches to a country at the risk of extinction from a large comet hurtling to earth.

Top quote: “Cities fall, but they are rebuilt. And heroes die, but they are remembered”

President Josiah ‘Jed’ Bartlet – The West Wing (Martin Sheen)

There are few fictional Presidents more popular than Josiah Bartlet from The West Wing played nimbly by Martin Sheen. His honest demeanour earned him plaudits in his 7 seasons on this show.

Top quote: “This is more important than re-elections. I want to speak now”

President Thomas J. Whitmore - Independence Day (Bill Pullman)

He conducted an aerial battle with aliens as well as delivering a fist-punching pre-battle speech exceeding even orator-in-chief Barack Obama.

Top quote: “‘We will not go quietly into the night!’ We will not vanish without a fight!”

President Frank Underwood - House of Cards (Kevin Spacey)

Kevin Spacey plays Underwood in the American adaptation of House of Cards with sadistic glee, making him equal parts terrifying and fascinating. He’s conniving and ruthless packaged up with a charming southern accent.

Top quote: “You’re right, I’m still white trash. I just happen to be white trash that lives in the White House”

President Tom Kirkman - Designated Survivor (Kiefer Sutherland)

Kirkman becomes the incumbent President after a terror atrocity takes out the government during a State of the Union address. In no time he's donning a suit and working out how to stabilise a country reeling from the attack, and unite what’s left of the government.

Top quote: “Do you really believe I should step down? You may be right. But for now, I’m all you got”

DESIGNATED SURVIVOR Season 1 is available to buy on DVD October 5th
