Naomi Watts, Elle Fanning, and Susan Sarandon are three of the most acclaimed actors of their respective generations. So it’s an absolute pleasure to see them share the spotlight in the heart-warming and powerful new film 3 Generations.
The brainchild of director Gaby Dellal, the film follows a teenage boy (Elle Fanning) who is due to start hormone replacement therapy, as his single mother (Naomi Watts), lesbian grandmother (Susan Sarandon), lesbian step-grandmother (Linda Emond) and estranged father (Tate Donovan) voice their concerns and ultimately strive to come together to support him.
And while a lot has changed in the world since the idea for the film first found its way into Dellal’s mind in 2011 – from The New York Times launching a dedicated op-ed section covering transgender issues, to Caitlyn Jenner capturing the world’s attention with her transition – the film is an important addition to the conversation as society moves closer towards widespread visibility and acceptance of transgender individuals.
It wasn't long before Dellal was joined by producer Dorothy Berwin, and together they commissioned playwright Nikole Beckwith to write the screenplay.
“The idea was to de-mystify a topic that’s usually pushed toward a niche section of film by saying, here’s one average American family,” says Beckwith. “Every aspect of the family – having two moms, Maggie’s single motherhood, Ray’s struggle – that’s our world today.”
“I was so happy that it’s not a ‘problem film’ about being transgender,” says Elle Fanning, who researched the role by speaking with transgender kids.
Dellal hopes that all members of the audience can find something to relate to in the film. “Every family faces challenges in raising children,” she says. “This family unit is working to understand gender identity, but for other families it can be something totally different. I'd love people to feel that the emotion and intimacy of this family is relevant to their own set of circumstances. I hope people leave the cinema feeling grateful for their family.”
