International Women's Day is March 8 and in honour of all the wonderful women in film, we are taking a look at some of the most inspirational females in Hollywood right now.
Bening has enjoyed impressive career longevity, earning four Oscar nominations since her breakthrough role in 1990's The Grifters. Her role in Mike Mills’s exquisite 20th Century Women saw her deliver a career best performance as a single mother making an effort to move with the times.
Not only did she win Best Director for The Hurt Locker, the film also won Best Picture and dismantled stereotypes about the types of films women direct. Most recently for Bigelow was 2017 thriller Detroit based on the story of one of the most terrifying untold stories in American history.
Blanchett is a fascinating actor, having played everyone from Bob Dylan to Elizabeth I, and a regular champion of equality in Hollywood. Arguably her finest role came in the form of Jasmine French, the deluded socialite who falls from grace in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine.
She’s an Oscar winning actress who tackled Hollywood’s lack of strong roles for women by setting up her own production company and found her own stories. Those stores were runaway successes; Wild, Gone Girl and more recently the TV drama Big Little Lies. Recently, Witherspoon returned to her rom-com roots in modern comedy Home Again.
