Meet the world's unluckiest family...
Set in 1980s Connecticut, Accidents Happen is a wickedly funny and surprisingly moving story about family, fate and misfortune in American suburbia. Chaos is a familiar notion for the Conways, a family that has been torn apart by catastrophe, whilst they desperately try to live a normal family life. But is this family’s tragedy simply a question of bad luck? Their youngest son Billy (Harrison Gilbertson: What’s Wrong With Virginia, Beneath Hill 60) has inexplicably been witness to a series of terrible events, and it seems the next disaster is always just around the corner. When one accident claims the life of his sister and leaves his brother severely brain-damaged, the weight of holding the family together falls on Billy’s shoulders. When the normally-reliable Billy takes up with the neighbourhood troublemaker, what ensues is a string of strange accidents followed by a collision of guilt, truth, self-discovery and redemption.
Because as accidents do occur, so can surprises and Billy’s misfortune may be just what the Conways need to move on and start afresh. Academy Award-winner Geena Davis (Thelma & Louise, The Long Kiss Goodnight) is exceptional as the razor-tongued mother of this fractured family, whose sarcastic wit and often-misplaced vulnerability will have you both laughing and crying in sympathy. The debut feature from Australian director Andrew Lancaster, Accidents Happen has a quirky, magical feel, which manages the perfect.
